It\u2019s been a year now and I still get chills on mention of the phrase \u201cjob hunting\u201d. Not because I found the search procedure to be difficult but for the fear of getting looted officially and that too with detailed paperwork. Any guesses what I am referring to?<\/p>\n
Of course! Those sincere and dutiful consultancies which are more concerned about our job needs than we are.<\/p>\n
When our college didn\u2019t opt for organizing a placement campus, we set out in search of livelihood on our own. First destination – job consultancies in Bhubaneswar.<\/p>\n
I would like to share some experiences with you that led me into identifying that 80% placement consultancies in Bhubaneswar are a wreck.<\/p>\n
My first encounter (which was, by the way, quite unpalatable) was with an organization located near Shahid Nagar. I saw their ad in the newspaper, which proclaimed that they needed 20 IT freshers for renowned companies for a monthly salary package of Rs. 20,000\/-.<\/p>\n
As per their placement program, they were supposed to conduct a week-long training (they called it demo) before an HR professional from HCL Bangalore taking us through a round of interview. After a week’s training and a personal interview by the HR person, three candidates (including myself) were short-listed. On being asked about our joining dates, they said it would be after a month and they would inform us once the appointment letter was ready. But strangely enough, it never did.<\/p>\n
After our continuous pestering for about two months, they finally blurted out their hidden intentions: \u201cThe HR who interviewed you feels that you are not yet ready to go live with work, so he has asked us to train you on the required platform for another three months and then he will conduct a final interview\u201d, they said.<\/p>\n
On enquiring about it further, the whole conspiracy just became crystal clear. They had provided a week of brush-up training (read Demo) just to trap some naive and unsuspecting candidates. In fact, later we found that the consultancy did not even have a placement program at all.<\/p>\n
At that point of time, I was just fresh out of college and eager to lap up any job opportunity that appeared promising. But there was something about this one that did not feel right so I dropped the idea altogether.<\/p>\n
Lotus in the Mud<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n At last, I received a call from \u201c2COMS\u201d, a renowned consultancy service with a national presence. Owing to the consecutive failures at all other places, I couldn’t bring myself to rely on this one. However, I can say 2COMS, unlike the ordinary job consultancies in Bhubaneswar, did justice to me and was worth my shot. \u00a0Although I did not get an offer as per my choice in terms of salary and field, at least I wasn’t taken for a ride. It was a very systematic procedure with proper documentation and authentic interviewers. They didn\u2019t charge a single rupee for the offer letter and helped me completely till I settled down in my new job.<\/p>\n Will these fake organizations continue to exploit us? Do they have the right to put our future in jeopardy?<\/p>\n No, they don\u2019t. They don\u2019t have any right to keep candidates on hold for long period of time and demand money or drag students forcibly to their offices and try extracting their phone numbers. These incidents might be considered trifle and ignored but I am sure many of you must have faced this problem and it must have left a huge impact on your career. What makes the scenario more complicated is that some fake organizations name themselves as new software companies and post ads for interviews just to continue with their despicable agenda.<\/p>\n The trend that job consultancies in Bhubaneswar are following is no less than extortion and is definitely a crime from various legal angles. But how far are the city police concerned? Will lodging a complaint against these organizations help or the files will be shoved aside for accommodating \u201cmore pressing matters at hand\u201d? This is the dilemma that most of us are going through while some are too worried about getting placements to bring such matters to public.<\/p>\n I would love to be a part of your experiences and any views on this are welcome.
