Bhubaneswar railway station would go Wi-Fi from January next year. Work on deployment of the Wi-Fi network has already commenced and will provide high-speed internet connectivity to the passengers, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) announced on Tuesday.
The facility would be extended to 28 railway stations under ECoR in a phased manner covering all by the end of 2016.
Cuttack, Sambalpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Rayagada, Jajpur-Keonjhar Road and Khurda Road will be among the major stations to provide Wi-Fi services to the passengers.
The programme is a part of the tie-up between Central PSU RailTel and internet major Google to provide high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity at 500 major railway stations in the country. In the first phase, 100 stations including Bhubaneswar would be connected by January 2016. The facility would provide high-speed connectivity to passengers on the existing model of free service for the first 30 minutes after which it would be chargeable.
In another major step, the ECoR has announced fitting the entire Bhubaneswar-Rameshwaram Express with bio-toilets. The Express train, which has around 23 coaches including five AC, 11 sleeper and four general, will start running with total bio-toilets by the end of this month.
A mid-term review of the works of the ECoR was held on Tuesday by General Manager Rajiv Vishnoi. The railway zone has turned out to be the only zone in Indian Railways to have registered positive growth in passenger traffic. From April to September of the current 2015-16 fiscal, the zone has carried 47.49 million passengers at a growth rate of over five per cent.
It has carried about 83.37 MT originating freight during the same period against 77.82 MT in the last year, registering a growth of 7.13 per cent.
The Zone has set target dates for completion of Rajsunakhala-Bolagarh line to June 2016 and Bolagarh to Nayagarh by 2017. Work on the 19-km line from Balangir to Bhainsapalli will start this year.
