The commissionerate of police have zeroed in on autorickshaw drivers to run three-wheelers especially for women. They conducted psychological tests on auto drivers to select the fittest ones to operate the service likely to be launched by end-June.
The mental reading of 270 drivers was taken by a trained psychologist. At least 200 drivers have passed the test. The exercise was carried out to eliminate those having ‘criminal minds’, said commissioner of police R P Sharma. “The criminal intents and leanings of drivers were studied during the tests,” he said.
He further said some other methods were put to use to single out those with criminal propensity. Sharma refused to elaborate.
“We verified the antecedents of the drivers by obtaining details about them from respective police stations. Also, we figured out whether the driver lives with his family or not so as to get an idea about their societal behaviours. We ascertained whether a driver is a member of autorickshaw association or not,” said Sharma. He said once police know the driver is a member of association then accountability could easily be fixed in case of untoward incidents.
The commissionerate of police in November last year planned to run ‘pink autos’ exclusively for women. Now, police have a change of mind after discussion with auto drivers. “We will affix a logo of the commissionerate of police on one side of the three-wheeler. Instead of painting the auto pink, we will paste pink strips on three sides of the vehicle,” Sharma said.
