Two International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) graduates have developed a mobile app to help people locate dustbins and toilets in cities. Initially, they have uploaded the information about four cities – Bhubaneswar, Puri, Cuttack and Chennai.
The mobile app called ‘Where is the Dustbin‘ can be downloaded from Google Play Store. To get the data about the public toilets and the dustbins put up by the local civic bodies, the duo personally surveyed the cities.
Kamal Kumar Sahoo and Avinash Panigrahi, who completed B-tech in electrical and electronics, worked on the app for a year after graduating in 2013. They made several trials before commissioning it for public use.
How to Use the App
All that people need to do is to download the app and register by furnishing details such as names and email ID’s.
The location option in the mobile has to be switched on for navigation.
When the app opens, people can see the images of dustbins and toilets from their current location.
The duo doesn’t want to monetize their invention as it is people-friendly. The app is not only a convenient tool for the visitors to the cities but also helpful for the locals.
“Many times it happens that we don’t know where exactly the civic body has put up big dustbins permanently. In just a click, they get the information,” said Kamal.
Within two months, the duo plans to upload data of all the cities of the country.
“We will move around all the cities for information regarding the public toilets. We will also seek help of local urban bodies for data on the public toilets,” he added.
