The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation will conduct raids across the city to zero in on unauthorized parking lots and help prevent people from facing harassment in the name of collecting parking fees.
In past one week, the BMC mayor Ananta Narayan Jena conducted surprise raids at two places and caught two individual red-handed while illegally collecting parking fee from people. They have been handed over to police.
“It has come to my notice that illegal parking is thriving in the city. I have directed the officials concerned to report to me if they find any such practice going on. I will make further raids to check the parking menace,” the mayor said.
Illegal parking lots are mushrooming across the city. There are complaints where drivers are made to cough up fees for keeping their vehicles even in front of ATM counters which are not a parking area.
According to a source linked to the BMC, there are around 55 authorized parking lot but at least 25 additional parking lots are operating illegally.
The illegal parking, most of which on street, are running without any permission from the BMC. The civic body floats tender to provide the parking management to private contractors. The illegal parking lot agents are operating using fake identity cards. The miscreants are putting up display boards and collecting parking fee from unsuspecting commuters.

Sources said complaints of illegal parking have come from locations such as Janpath, Vani Vihar, behind Unit-1 market and Rasulgarh and Satya Nagar.
The BMC commissioner Krishan Kumar said they are working out a mechanism, whereby they can do away with any unauthorized parking.
“Under smart city programs, we are going to introduce technology to make parking hassle free,” said Kumar.
