The Temple City of India, Bhubaneswar has been adjudged the 2nd runners-up at the Barcelona Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC) held in Spain recently.
BMC Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena broke the news at a press conference in the city yesterday.
“We have been able to compete with world class cities where 250 projects from 45 countries participated in it. Bhubaneswar was among the top six cities. Nairobi bagged the top spot and the remaining cities were declared the runners-up. We have bagged the second runners-up position. With this, investors would evince interest to invest and tourist inflow would increase,” Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena said.
The ranking was based on the proposals submitted based on various developmental projects in cities. Bhubaneswar was competing in the innovative global south category.
The awards were selected under City Award, Project Award and Innovative Global South Award categories from an unprecedented number of entries this year. The winners were selected for their cutting edge technologies that resolve urban challenges and benefit cities and their citizens.
While Kenya’s Nairobi emerged as champion, Chennai followed Bhubaneswar in 4th position.
Bhubaneswar’s Smart City proposal focused on developing a model for achieving social equity by placing children at the center of its transformation building upon the New Urban Agenda’s three-legged approach- local fiscal systems, urban planning, and basic services and infrastructure.
The World Smart City Awards have been established to recognize, promote and support innovative solutions or strategies that can potentially change citizen’s lives by increasing efficiency, generating business and improving the quality of life.
